Short answer
A healthy body fat range for adults is roughly 21–32% for women and 8–19% for men in their 20s and 30s, rising a little with age. You can estimate yours at home from a tape measure: a man with a 90 cm waist, 38 cm neck and 178 cm height comes out at about 20%, in the “average” category.
The Body Fat Calculator runs the Navy and skinfold equations for you, so you only need a soft tape measure.
1. Body fat ranges by age
These healthy ranges come from a study that linked body fat to healthy BMI values in adults (Gallagher et al., 2000):
| Age | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| 20–39 | 21–32% | 8–19% |
| 40–59 | 23–33% | 11–21% |
| 60–79 | 24–35% | 13–24% |

2. Body fat categories (ACE)
| Category | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Essential fat | 10–13% | 2–5% |
| Athletes | 14–20% | 6–13% |
| Fitness | 21–24% | 14–17% |
| Average | 25–31% | 18–24% |
| Obese | 32%+ | 25%+ |
Essential fat is the minimum the body needs to function, not a goal to aim for. Women need more than men because of reproductive and hormonal needs.
3. How to measure body fat at home
- 1Measure the waist at the navel (men) or the narrowest point (women), the neck below the larynx, and for women the hips at the widest point.
- 2Keep the tape snug without squeezing the skin, and breathe out normally.
- 3Enter the numbers in the Body Fat Calculator.
The estimate is sensitive to the waist. For the same man, a 100 cm waist instead of 90 cm raises the result from about 20% to about 27%, so measure carefully and in the same place each time.
4. Body fat vs BMI
BMI only uses height and weight, so it cannot separate muscle from fat. Body fat percentage fills that gap, and the Lean Body Mass Calculator turns it into kilograms of lean tissue. Read our BMI guide for when BMI is and is not useful, and check the BMI Calculator alongside your body fat reading.
5. Quick habits that lower body fat
- Eat a modest calorie deficit. Find your maintenance with the TDEE Calculator and see how many calories to eat to lose 1 pound a week.
- Keep protein high to protect muscle. See how much protein you need per day.
- Lift weights two or three times a week so lost weight is mostly fat.
- Walk daily. Steps add up and are easy to sustain.
6. Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy body fat percentage?expand_more
For healthy-weight adults, one large study found about 21 to 32 percent for women and 8 to 19 percent for men aged 20 to 39, with ranges rising slightly with age.
What is a good body fat percentage for men and women by fitness category?expand_more
The American Council on Exercise lists athletes at 14 to 20 percent for women and 6 to 13 percent for men, fitness at 21 to 24 and 14 to 17, and average at 25 to 31 and 18 to 24.
How accurate is the Navy body fat method?expand_more
It is useful for consistent at-home tracking but is an estimate. Its error varies from person to person, so do not treat it as interchangeable with a DEXA scan.
Why is my body fat percentage higher than BMI suggests?expand_more
BMI uses only height and weight, so it cannot tell fat from muscle. Two people with the same BMI can have very different body fat percentages.
How often should I measure body fat?expand_more
Every two to four weeks is enough. Use the same method, time of day and tape position each time and watch the trend rather than a single reading.
