Our Methodology
How we build each calculator
Every calculator on CalculatePilot is built from a named, verifiable formula — not a proprietary algorithm or approximation we invented. The formula and its source are documented before development begins, and the calculator is verified against at least three known correct inputs (we calculate the expected output manually or from an authoritative reference, then confirm the tool produces the same result).
Where a calculation has more than one accepted formula in common use (for example, several formulas exist for ideal weight, lean body mass, and VO2 max estimation), we use the most widely cited in peer-reviewed or professional reference literature, and the calculator page identifies which specific formula is in use and why.
Sources and references
Financial calculators are based on standard time-value-of-money formulas and are consistent with those used in professional financial planning software. Health calculators are built from formulas published in peer-reviewed medical and nutrition literature — the Mifflin-St Jeor equation for BMR (validated in Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 1990), the Boer formula for lean body mass, Institute of Medicine dietary reference intakes for fiber and pregnancy nutrition, and WHO/AHA guidelines for blood pressure categories and body composition assessment.
Math calculators implement standard mathematical definitions and algorithms — the Euclidean algorithm for GCD, the standard normal distribution approximation (Abramowitz and Stegun) for z-score percentiles, the standard cross-product and dot-product definitions for vectors. Where a calculation has nuanced edge cases (such as the modulo operation for negative numbers, which differs between mathematical and programming conventions), the page explains the difference explicitly.
What our calculators can and cannot do
Every calculator on this site produces an estimate, not a guaranteed outcome. Real-world results depend on factors no formula can fully capture — individual metabolism, specific market conditions, local tax rules, and dozens of other variables. The estimates are designed to be accurate enough to be genuinely useful for planning and decision-making, but they are not a substitute for professional advice on high-stakes decisions.
Where a calculator makes a simplifying assumption that a user should know about — for example, assuming monthly compounding when some loans compound differently, or using a standard 365-day year for interest calculations — the relevant page states this plainly. We do not present simplified models as more precise than they are.
Corrections and updates
If a user identifies a genuine error in a formula or calculation, we review the report, correct the calculator if the error is confirmed, and note the correction. Corrections are applied to all pages using the affected formula simultaneously — because our calculators are built from a shared generator rather than individually edited HTML files, a single correction automatically propagates sitewide.
