When to use mean vs. median

The mean (average) is calculated by summing all values and dividing by the count — it's useful for most everyday purposes but is sensitive to outliers. A single unusually large or small value can pull the mean significantly, which is why median is often reported alongside or instead of mean for things like income or home prices, where outliers are common.

The median is the middle value when data is sorted, and it's not affected by extreme outliers the same way — this is why 'median household income' is typically reported instead of average income, since a small number of very high earners could otherwise skew the average upward.

Understanding mode and range

Mode is the most frequently occurring value in a data set. A data set can have no mode (if all values are unique), one mode, or multiple modes (if two or more values tie for most frequent) — this calculator handles all three cases.

Range is simply the difference between the highest and lowest values, giving a quick sense of how spread out the data is, though it doesn't capture the distribution as thoroughly as standard deviation does.
