Running Pace Calculator

Calculate your running pace per mile or kilometer, plus your average speed, from your race time and distance.

Using pace to plan a race

Knowing your pace per mile or kilometer is one of the most useful numbers for race planning — it lets you calculate splits (target times at checkpoints along a race) and gauge whether you're on track to hit a goal finish time partway through a run.

Many runners train at a range of paces for different purposes — easy runs at a slower, conversational pace, tempo runs at a moderately hard sustained pace, and interval training at faster than race pace — rather than running every workout at the same intensity.

Converting between mile and kilometer pace

Since a mile is longer than a kilometer (about 1.6 times), your pace per mile will always be a larger number than your pace per kilometer for the same running speed — this trips up runners switching between US and international race formats, where finish times are the same but pace units differ.

This calculator shows both automatically, which is useful if you train using one unit but race using the other.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my pace per mile a bigger number than my pace per kilometer?

Because a mile covers more distance than a kilometer, it takes longer to run — so at the same overall speed, your minutes-per-mile figure will always be larger than your minutes-per-kilometer figure.

What's a good pace for a beginner runner?

This varies widely by individual fitness level — the most useful benchmark is usually your own pace over time, tracking whether it's improving, rather than comparing directly to others.
