Why scientific notation is useful
Scientific notation expresses numbers as a coefficient (typically between 1 and 10) multiplied by a power of 10, making extremely large or extremely small numbers much easier to read and work with — writing 6.02 × 10²³ is far more manageable than writing out Avogadro's number with 23 zeros.
It also makes comparing the relative size of very different numbers more intuitive, since the exponent alone gives an immediate sense of scale before even looking at the coefficient.
Reading the exponent correctly
A positive exponent means the original number is 10 or greater (the decimal point moves right that many places to expand it back out), while a negative exponent means the original number is between 0 and 1 (the decimal point moves left).
