Calorie multipliers by life stage
Resting energy requirement (RER) is multiplied by a factor for the dog's stage and activity, as used in veterinary nutrition guidelines. They are starting points, since individual dogs vary by 20% or more.

Resting energy (RER)
The calories a dog needs at rest, from body weight in kilograms.

How to work out how much to feed a dog
- Enter your dog's weight and choose its life stage and activity.
- Set the body condition score. Heavier dogs are fed for their ideal weight.
- Enter the kcal per cup from the food label.
- Read the daily cups and split them across meals, then adjust with your vet over a few weeks.

Frequently asked questions
How many calories does my dog need each day?
Multiply resting energy (70 × weight in kg to the power 0.75) by a factor for life stage and activity. A typical neutered adult uses about 1.6 times resting energy. A 55 lb dog needs roughly 1,250 kcal.
How many cups of food is that?
Divide the calories by the kcal per cup on your food label. Foods range from about 300 to 450 kcal per cup, so the same dog can need very different cup amounts.
How do treats fit in?
A common guideline is that treats should be no more than 10% of daily calories. Reduce the meal portion by the same number of calories.
What is body condition score?
It is a 1 to 9 scale where 4 to 5 is ideal. You should feel the ribs under a thin fat layer and see a waist from above. A score of 7 or more means the dog is overweight.
How often should I feed my dog?
Most adult dogs do well on two meals a day, and puppies on three or four. Weigh the food rather than scooping, since a cup can vary by 20%.
