UK Take-Home Pay Calculator

Estimate what reaches a UK bank account after income tax, employee National Insurance and optional student-loan PAYE for tax year 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027. England, Wales and Northern Ireland only — not a currency overlay of the US paycheck calculator.

Standard personal allowance £12,570 (tapered above £100,000). Class 1 category A employee NI. Pension is modelled as salary sacrifice — it reduces taxable pay, NI and student loan. Net-pay arrangement is a different job and is not guessed here.

Why this is its own page

The user job here is “what lands in my UK account from this salary?” The answer is a function of PAYE bands × employee NI × optional student-loan thresholds. The paycheck calculator asks you to type a US-style effective tax rate. Changing that page to pounds still uses the wrong rules. The UK student loan calculator answers only the Student Finance line. This page combines the three deductions from the same 2026/27 dataset.

Worked examples (pre-computed)

These use the same bands and student-loan round-down as the calculator, so the answer is readable if JavaScript is off. No pension.

1. £35,000, no student loan
Personal allowance £12,570. Taxable £22,430 × 20% = £4,486 income tax
NI: 8% × £22,430 = £1,794.40
Take-home £28,719.60 a year / £2,393.30 a month

2. £35,000, Plan 5 student loan
Same tax and NI as example 1.
Monthly pay £2,916.67 − Plan 5 threshold £2,083 = £833.67 over the line
9% = £75.03 → PAYE takes £75 × 12 = £900
Take-home £27,819.60 a year / £2,318.30 a month
The student-loan line is why this is not a renamed paycheck page.

3. £60,000, no student loan
Taxable £47,430: £37,700 × 20% + £9,730 × 40% = £11,432 income tax
NI: 8% × £37,700 + 2% × £9,730 = £3,210.60
Take-home £45,357.40 a year / £3,779.78 a month

4. £12,570
At the personal allowance and NI primary threshold. Tax £0, NI £0. Take-home £12,570.

What this figure does not include

  • Scotland. Different income-tax rates and bands. Not a token-swap of this page.
  • Self-employed Class 4 NI, dividends, savings interest. This is an employed salary on PAYE.
  • Tax codes other than a full personal allowance. Unknown codes stay unknown.
  • Net-pay pension, marriage allowance, Blind Person’s Allowance, High Income Child Benefit Charge. Each changes the answer; none is invented here.
  • A US federal / state withholding estimate. Use the paycheck calculator for that job.
  • Student-loan interest, remaining balance or write-off date. The UK student loan calculator is the payslip-deduction sibling; it still does not invent a payoff date.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as the paycheck calculator?

No. That page uses a tax rate you type. This page uses published 2026/27 UK bands.

Does this cover Scotland?

No. Scottish income tax is a different rate table. This page is England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Which tax code is assumed?

A full £12,570 personal allowance, tapered above £100,000. Other codes are not guessed.

How is the student-loan line calculated?

The same monthly PAYE round-down as the UK student loan calculator, then × 12 for the year.

Is this exactly what PAYE will take this month?

No. Annualised bands, not a cumulative payroll run. A real month can differ by a few pounds.
